GUIDED TOURS OF THE EXHIBITION “FOOD IN ART”

Masterpieces from the 17th century to Warhol

Brescia, at Palazzo Martinengo - 24 January/14 June 2015

Explore the world of painting with the Mosaico tourist guides, who are expert in art, history and conservation of cultural assets.

Sponsored by EXPO 2015 and in line with its theme, this exhibition, displaying more than 100 works divided into ten sections, will reveal how the painters, active between the 17th and 19th centuries, loved painting foods and dishes of their native lands.

Food has been represented for over four centuries, from the Baroque to the Hyperrealism, by great artists, as for example Campi, Recco, Baschenis, Giacomo Ceruti (Il Pitocchetto), Magritte, De Chirico, Manzoni, Fontana, Lichtenstein, LaChapelle and Warhol

he Chapel del Santissimo Sacramento in the church of San Giovanni Evangelista

Brescia boasts the presence of a masterpiece representing the theme of the Santissimo Sacramento through a series of painting by Romanino and Moretto. This collection of paintings, located in the church of San Giovanni Evangelista, was commissioned by the church canons in 1521 to decorate the chapel. Moretto painted La Raccolta della Manna (Gathering Manna), Elia confortato dall’Angelo (Elijah awoken by an angel), Ultima Cena (the Last Supper); while Romanino painted La Resurrezione di Lazzaro (the Raising of Lazarus), La Cena in casa del fariseo (the Supper at the Pharisee’s house) and La Messa di San Gregorio (San Gregorio’s Mass). It is the Christian representation of the redemption of human beings through food turning into spiritual sustenance.
